One of York’s much-loved buildings will be turned into a pub if new plans are approved.
Brewery and pub chain Greene King want to transform Foss Bridge House into a bar.
Famous as the home of Stubbs ironmongers for nearly a century, the building has more recently operated as a Loch Fyne fish restaurant.
Dating from 1878, Foss Bridge House is Grade II listed. According to plans submitted to City of York Council, Greene King want to remodel the interior and put new signs on the exterior.
They would install a central bar area with marble effect top, moulded panel front and brass footrail.
The fish counter would go, and a new dining area created near the main entrance.
A new Speakeasy Room would be created in the basement, including a curved bar.
Key features retained
Planning documents state: “The proposed works are judged to result in no harm to the significance of the Foss Bridge House”.
Key features will be “retained or enhanced”.
“Furthermore the proposed works seek the reinstatement of the late 19th century counter, an important early fitting of the interior, along its original alignment with the adjacent counter sections.”
Foss Bridge House was built as a warehouse for W J Whitehead & Co linen drapers, before becoming the Liberal Club in 1901.
In 1909 FR Stubbs moved in, and operated their ironmongers store there till 2004.
