York City sold all their allocation of tickets for Saturday’s play-off final in record time today.

Home tickets went on general sale at 5pm – and by 6.18pm the club announced they were all gone.

It means a record crowd will be at the LNER Community Stadium to cheer on City when they face Boston – with promotion to the National League at stake.

On social media, the club said: “Thank you for your incredible support!”

Long before 5pm, a huge queue built up at the ticket office at the stadium.

Many more fans were hovering over their keyboards planning to buy tickets via the online shop.

Shortly before the sale began, the club announced there would be no cap on how many tickets supporters could purchase.

However, many of those buying online – sometimes after a queuing for 30 minutes or more – found when they got to the checkout they were limited to two.

The capacity for the game had already been cut by 1,000 to 7,500 after the intervention of the York Safety Advisory Group. This was due to “to the damage to the stadium, pyrotechnics and pitch encroachment at the play-off eliminator against Chorley“.

Due to the huge demand, many long-term supporters were left disappointed – either coming away without any tickets, or having to leave some members of their family at home on the big day.

Here are some of the comments from fans this evening:

Lots of loyal fans home and away are quite rightly wondering wtf has gone on here!!! We only managed 2 tickets after being in a queue for half an hour, tried to buy 4 but wouldn’t allow it?

Impossible for families to get tickets seeing as you couldn’t buy more than 2. So frustrating.

Absolute farce. Was put in a queue at 5pm. Got in after about 20 mins. Had selected my seats. Was just about to make my payment and was kicked out! Had to queue again for another 20 mins. Got in and they’d sold out!! Gutted!!

Tried at 5. Kept on hold until sold out. Tried hospitality. Sold out.
Should have built a larger stadium!

Meanwhile, the club is hoping to live stream the game. It said tonight: “We are currently seeking clarification from the National League on the possibility of Livestreaming Saturday’s Promotion Final and will update supporters as soon as possible.”
