Enjoy the match, but please leave your car at home – or at least park responsibly.

That’s the message for York City fans today from councillor Keith Orrell.

Tomorrow night is a huge game for City, as they take on Chorley in the play-off eliminator at the LNER Community Stadium.

Victory would be a step towards promotion, and excitement is building. By 10am this morning (Tuesday) 5,000 tickets had been sold to the home fans.

Cllr Orrell is urging fans to use public transport to attend the game – additional bus services will be provided by First York.

But if you do drive, please park away from residential streets, is his message.

Today Cllr Orrell said: “It’s brilliant that City have reached the play-offs after their terrific run at the end of the season.

“As support for the club has grown, so have concerns in the local community about parking on residential streets on match days.”

He said the council had worked with bus operators, the stadium team and Vangarde shopping centre to reduce the parking pressure.

“Covid understandably delayed some plans which would have seen increased public transport use on match days, but work is ongoing to make sure local communities as well as fans are supported.

“If supporters are not able to use public transport to get to the match, the easiest place to park is the Vangarde car park, which is free from 6pm, using Malton Road and the ring road to get there.”

Cllr Orrell added: “We hope that City win on Wednesday and go on to get the promotion the club and our city deserve.”
