Plans to run tourist ‘specials’ along the iconic Settle to Carlisle rail route again have been scrapped.
The services, which previously have used Inter-City 125 trains painted in green, took passengers over the iconic Ribblehead Viaduct and across the Yorkshire/Cumbria border.
The company that runs the trains says it doesn’t think it will be financially viable this year as people are forced to “tighten their belts” due to price rises on fuel and essential items.
It is hoped they can return in 2023.
Statement from Rail Charter Services:
“Unfortunately owing to extraordinary difficult trading conditions we have had to take the difficult decision to suspend our Settle-Carlisle tourist rail services in 2022.
“The current economic conditions have created the perfect storm of high costs while at the same time all the indicators point to constrained demand as people tighten their belts during this unprecedented time of economic uncertainty.
“We would like to thank all our loyal passengers and hope to see you back onboard in 2023”
