Around 1,800 school students formed a powerful ‘chain of peace’ across York city centre today (Wednesday).
The youngsters took to the streets, alongside school staff, to share their thoughts and prayers with the people of Ukraine.
Linked by a ribbon in the national Ukrainian colours of blue and yellow, the children formed a line around York Minster and along the city’s busy shopping streets.
The demonstration was inspired by a student at All Saints RC School. Head teacher Sharon Keelan-Beardsley said: “We’re here today because we have actually listened to the call from Pope Francis.
“Pope Francis has asked that everybody prays for peace today. And on Sunday, we got a message through to our school from one of our students saying we need to be doing something, we’re a Catholic school – and I wholeheartedly agree with her.
“We’re going to do some practical things like raise money for charity. But today what we’re doing is we’re having a prayer chain for peace, and the chain is going to run right from Bar Convent to the Minister.
“All of our students are going to be joined with ribbons in blue and yellow, and then we’re going to say prayers for peace in Ukraine.”
She estimated that 1,800 students took part, including everyone from All Saints and well as students and staff from Roman Catholic primary schools, and Manor School in the city.
All Saints’ student Sophie told YorkMix: “What we’re doing today is really important. We need to stand together and remember those who may have lost family members or their home.”
Fellow school student Martha said: “We’re all deeply affected by what’s going on in Ukraine.
“Especially as this is a type of conflict that my generation has never experienced before, or been old enough to fully comprehend.
“Initiatives like these are an important sign of solidarity, and a recognition that more needs to be done.”
