A sinkhole has opened up in a York road this afternoon (Tuesday).
The hole is on South Bank Avenue, close to its junction with Bishopthorpe Road.
A police car and van are at the scene, alongside two fire engines.
The junction is coned off.
In a tweet, police said: “Road closed: South Bank Avenue is currently closed at the junction with Bishopthorpe Road due to a sink hole in the road.
“Please find alternative route.”
Station watch manager Andy White from Acomb Fire Station said: “On the face of it, it looks quite a small hole.
“But there’s actually quite a large cavern underneath – maybe about 8m by 8m.
“So we’ve closed the road, preventing anyone getting close, to stop them falling into the hole.”
The cause is unknown, but a team from the City of York Council highways department were coming to investigate.
They would also put a full cordon in place and signpost a diversion.
