Network Rail says it plans to close three private level crossings in the Church Fenton area.
The proposals include building a new highway bridge and road to maintain access to cottages on Rose Lane and local farms, together with a new footbridge for Rose Lane residents close to the existing one.
It’s part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade which is making the railway between York, Leeds and Manchester able to carry more trains at faster speeds.
Level crossings can pose a serious risk to users, and the trains too, so they want to create a safer way for people to cross in as many places as possible.
They plan to build a new bridge from Common Lane in Church Fenton which will allow then to close:
Adamsons level crossing
Rose Lane level crossing
and
Poulters level crossing

Rose Lane is a particularly difficult location with a number of houses cut off if the crossing isn’t available. But it’s also on a curved section of track which makes it difficult to see trains coming, especially in bad weather.
Network Rail says it has been engaging with the land and homeowners in the area who will be impacted by the proposals and that has helped shape the designs being presented for consultation.
They’re now keen to share the proposals with the local community and hear your feedback on our plans.

Next steps
Following the consultation process, they will consider all the feedback received and aim to submit the final design for planning approval in Summer 2022.
