Something special landed in the Shambles this morning.
YorkMix reported last month that the York Ice Trail is back for 2022 – after being cancelled last year due to the pandemic – with a theme of Around the World.
This year’s sculptures will transport visitors and residents to places both real and fictional, as 40 dazzling ice sculptures will line the streets of York.
And the first one has been revealed today.

Make It York’s Around the World ice sculpture, featuring a hot air balloon and famous landmarks, landed in York’s historic Shambles this morning.
The landmarks in ice form include Big Ben, the Eiffel Tower and the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
Visitors will be able to see the sculpture for themselves when it lands on Blake Street when the Ice Trail takes place on 5 and 6 March.
Worth the wait
The York Ice Trail was originally meant to take place on the first weekend of February, but was postponed to March due to rising Covid-19 cases in the city.
Sarah Loftus, managing director at Make It York, said: “We’re delighted to be bringing back the much-loved York Ice Trail event for 2022, and although slightly later than planned, it will be worth the wait!
“After a couple of years where many of us haven’t been able to travel too far, this year’s theme will bring sculptures inspired from ‘around the world’ to the streets of York.”
It’s set to be a magical weekend, with many sculptures not to be missed. And for the first time this year, YorkMix Radio have their very own sculpture!
Find the station’s Bug Count Cash Giveaway sculpture on Parliament Street and you could be in with a chance of winning £1,000.
Other highlights include a wonderland at Middletons Hotel, City of York Council’s ‘The York Skyline’, and a Rugby League World Cup Trophy ice sculpture to celebrate York being a host city for the tournament later this year.
York Ice Trail is a Make It York event, with main sponsors First York.
