One of York’s best restaurants is set to expand, creating eight jobs in the process.

Skosh on Micklegate is seeking permission to extend into the empty office unit next door, formerly home to Coles Solicitors.

The current restaurant can seat 47 diners. Under plans submitted to City of York Council, this would be increased, the kitchen would be enlarged and a cold store added.

The expansion would “continue the eclectic aesthetic and open kitchen of the existing Skosh restaurant while providing an improved flow of spaces and extra seating.

“A new link between the kitchen and 96 Micklegate would continue the atmosphere of the existing restaurant into the new space.”

A new shop front, painted grey, would “tie in with the existing Skosh and The Falcon Tap frontages”. Bar style seating would be in the window.

A serving hatch would link the former Coles building with the kitchen. One room would become a lounge or private dining area.

Skosh, run by chef-owner Neil Bentinck, is one of York’s leading restaurants. A year after opening in 2016, Skosh was named Yorkshire Life Restaurant of the Year and shortly after gained a Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand.

In 2021, Skosh ranked at no 18 In the National Restaurant Awards.

Planning documents stated: “Having progressed through the Covid pandemic whilst undertaking charity work (the Supper Collective, awarded a Civic Trust ‘lockdown heroes’ plaque) and to then seek to expand is testament to Skosh’s loyal customer base, growing reputation and potential growth.”
