Julian Sturdy, the MP for York Outer, has raised the progress of the funding to build a new station in Haxby with Simon Clarke MP, the Chief Secretary to the Treasury.

Speaking in the House of Commons, Mr Sturdy pointed to the importance of local rail connections to regional growth and stressed that connecting more towns to the network should be a key focus of the Government’s wider rail strategy.

The plan is to build it slightly to the north of Haxby on the York to Scarborough line.

Today, Mr Sturdy sought confirmation of earlier assurances given to him by the Chancellor that final funding would be forthcoming for the building of the station once the current planning phase has been concluded.

In response, the Minister assured Mr Sturdy that the Treasury and the Department for Transport would continue to offer their full support for the scheme.

After speaking in the Chamber, Mr Sturdy said:

“With the recent interest in the Government’s Integrated Rail Plan, it is important to remember that levelling-up is not just about the large-scale infrastructure projects.

“The Government also needs to continue its focus on connecting smaller towns and nearby villages to the rail network.

“The long-anticipated station at Haxby will do exactly this for thousands of people in the surrounding area who must currently use increasingly congested local roads to travel to York.

“In the Chamber today, it was good to hear the Chief Secretary reaffirm the Government’s commitment to supporting the delivery of Haxby station.

“I am confident that with the plans well developed and the selection of a site imminent, the final Government funding announcement will soon be forthcoming and I will continue to press Ministers for confirmation on this.”
