These are the new security barriers that have been installed in York city centre.

They are part of the temporary defences put in place to protect the city from terrorist attack over the festive season.

The barriers, found at locations including Goodramgate, Parliament Street and High Petergate, have been put in place by City of York Council and Make It York.

First seen in York in 2019, this year’s measures have been refined in response to the experiences that year. Some locations have been changed to reduce the likelihood of queues, and ramps are in place to improve accessibility.

The barriers are being installed early because contractors are unavailable next week, but the security measures will not be staffed and in full use until the St Nicholas Fair Christmas market opens on Thursday 18 November.

Cllr Andrew Waller, executive member for the economy and strategic planning, said: “York’s festive atmosphere is building up and Christmas is an important time across the economy, especially for our many independent local businesses. Whilst enjoying the holiday spirit, we must take extra care and look after each other.

“We want to reassure residents that we’re taking action to allow you to enjoy the holiday season safely – not just with COVID measures in place but also responding to unfortunately enduring threats from possible terror attacks.”

Supt Mark Khan, North Yorkshire Police Commander for York and Selby, said: “Although the terrorist threat level has now been lowered to substantial, we still need to remain vigilant and do everything possible to keep people safe.

“These latest measures are a welcome addition to our existing security plans designed to help keep York safe and secure during the festive season and the weeks leading up to it.

“Our Project Servator teams will also be out and about and could appear anywhere, anytime, so if you see them, please stop for a chat and find out how your support can help prevent crime and terrorism.”
