In the latest accolade for York’s foodie reputation, two city restaurants were awarded three AA rosettes today (Wednesday).
The Bow Room Restaurant at Grays Court Hotel, and Marygate restaurant Roots York, have both gained the rare honour.
Only 16 restaurants across the UK were awarded three rosettes – and only three of these were in the north of England.

According to the AA, three rosette venues are: “Outstanding restaurants that achieve standards that demand recognition well beyond their local area.
“The cooking is underpinned by the selection and sympathetic treatment of the highest quality ingredients. Timing, seasoning and the judgment of flavour combinations will be consistently excellent.”
Helen Heraty, owner of Grays Court, said: “We set our sights high on both the quality of produce and service for The Bow Room. We wanted a fine-dining experience that would match the indulgent, yet relaxed and welcoming offer of our hotel, and thanks to our hard-working team we are achieving this.”
Head chef Adam Jackson, previously chef patron of the 3 Rosette Park Restaurant in York and head chef of the Black Swan Oldstead, joined Grays this summer.
“This accolade is a badge of honour for the whole team here at The Bow Room,” Adam said.
“The team and I work hard to ensure that every dish that crosses the pass is the very best it can be, offering complex and enjoyable taste combinations with a sense of theatre and wonder.”
Grays Court was voted the Best Small Hotel in England 2020.
Roots York is also a multi award winner. We revealed in January that the Marygate restaurant had become the first in the city to be awarded a coveted Michelin star.
