One of York’s more imposing pubs is closed and out of action.
The Punchbowl on Lowther Street is shut, and a security firm has been patrolling the premises.
But the owner says that they do have plans to reopen it.

One of York’s larger pubs, the Punchbowl has three main areas – a main bar, a games room and a large function room, each with their own bars.
There’s also a large outdoor area at the front.
It is owned by the Stonegate Group. A spokesperson told YorkMix: “We are in the process of completing some property works, including redecoration.
“We are working with a new business partner who will be reopening the pub very soon.”
New publican wanted
The Stonegate Group is looking for a new manager for the Punchbowl. The regional manager describes it as “a fantastic community pub which enjoys trade from the local community and student population which provide a high percentage of the customer base, supported by the staff from the hospital nearby”.
The website says: “We are now looking for a new or experienced publican who can maximise all this pub has to offer by utilising the trading areas to suit the local demographic to capitalise on trade throughout the week and on weekends.
“The new publican will need to invest in this site internally and externally with an enhancement of developing a fully equipped trade kitchen to offer guests a high-quality home cooked meal with a focus on lunchtime offers bringing in trade from the local workers and students.”
