A new takeaway and café offering a unique food combination is planning to open in York.
Called Tulsi, the venue will be “a new, exciting and vibrant food business whose offering is labelled as ‘Grilled, Gelato, Go’,” says a planning application now with City of York Council.
It will offer a combination of grilled foods and ice creams, primarily for takeaway but also with some al fresco seating.

Tulsi wants to open in a corner property on Burton Stone Lane, previously Hong Kong House, which has been a takeaway since 1975.
“There is nothing like the proposal in the immediate area, or indeed in York, and the hybrid offer of high quality grilled food with side and gelato desserts, in a takeaway format is an exciting prospect,” the planning application says.
‘Opportunity for uplift’
The plans would see the outside of the building given a “high-quality and contemporary design” makeover, including full-height windows and a timber fascia.
This will help the “uplift” of the area, according to the documents submitted on behalf of Kabir Family Law, a solicitors practice based at Clifton Moor.
“With recent continued property price rises, the area is set to see a new era, as more people with disposable income move into the area,” the design statement says.
“With future development of the football ground and the TA Barracks , there is opportunity for uplift in the area.
“In response businesses will be required to up their game in response to demand for something better. A strategy that has been taken into account throughout the design development of this application, has been one of creating a future catalyst for regeneration of an area that quite simply lacks quality and vibrance.”
The plans allow for six tables outside, but it would be primarily a takeaway business.
