York will soon have a large new place to eat.
Work has begun to transform the old Russells Carvery on Coppergate into an Italian restaurant.
Known as the Vitoria, it will be run by Prima Nova Ltd, a restaurant company based in Newcastle. It will offer pizza, tapas and grilled food.
It spans an older Grade II listed building, and a newer brick-built unit. The fit-out will see a new bar area created, new floors and furniture, and a door fitted on the brick frontage to Coppergate.

Russells Carvery closed in July 2019 after 32 years. “Increasing costs and overheads including property costs have contributed to the business’s demise, like many others before it,” the owners said at the time.
It remained on the market until a licensing application last October revealed it was due to get a new lease of life.
The new owners have a poster in the window, saying they are recruiting management, chefs, servers and bartenders: “Send your C.V to [email protected]”.
The property, at 24 to 26 Coppergate, is owned by the council was on offer for rent of £85,000 per year, £5,200 service charge, and business rates of £77,000.
