These are the latest visuals revealing how the former Bootham Park Hospital will look like after being turned into a private retirement home.

The plans, now submitted to the council, would see new buildings constructed at the site, alongside the refurbishment of the original John Carr Grade I listed hospital.

Altogether 170 homes for older people in need of care and support would be created.

Other proposed features include a wellness centre, dining room, fruit and vegetable garden, a cinema room, a hobby room, games room, a library and lounges, exercise studio, staff and guest accommodation.

The plans come from developers Enterprise Retirement Living, working with the current owner NHS Property Services.

Enterprise development manager Peter Martin said: “These plans will preserve the key heritage assets on the site and create a long-term sustainable future for this magnificent site.”

The parkland will remain open to the public and be upgraded with funding from NHS Property Services.

The improvements include woodland trails, picnic areas, sensory gardens and edible planting, as well as the potential for community events to be held.

How it will look

Bootham School, next door, will take over responsibility for maintaining the public spaces, and will invest in providing and promoting the use of new informal sports pitches to other schools and community groups.

A bistro in the retirement home will also be open to the public.

Enterprise says it will restore the historic gates and railings across the site including those prominently situated on Bootham itself and providing an area dedicated for air ambulance landing.
