Traffic officer hits out over complaints about delays after tragic A64 crash

A police officer who was at the scene of the accident on the A64, where two children and a woman lost their lives, has spoken out on social media.

The tragic incident happened at around 8pm near Jinnah Restaurant at Flaxton on Tuesday night and involved a white HGV and a grey motorhome.

Sgt Paul Cording, a roads policing and Senior Investigating Officer, praised all his colleagues in the emergency services who had to deal with the accident.

However he was critical of people on social media who had complained about the delays and the speed at which diversions had been set up.

Sgt Cording said:

“Not really sure where to start with this one apart from my heart aches for the family and friends of those involved in this devastating incident.

I attended this awful incident along with many other emergency services colleagues and what I can say is I am humbled and privileged to work with such professional, dedicated and amazing people who all pull together in the most tragic of times.

A heartfelt thank you to you all (you know who you are).

To those keyboard warriors who are armed with little or incorrect information complaining we should be sorting out diversions, I’m sorry (actually I’m not) but our priorities were elsewhere.

Thank you all for your kind messages today it means a lot and if anyone needs a chat, brew or someone to sound off to then you know where I am”

The fourth passenger in the motorhome, a six year old boy, was taken to hospital with a serious head injury.

The driver of the motorhome, a 48 year old man, was taken to hospital with serious but not believed to be life threatening, injuries.

The driver of the HGV was uninjured.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any dashcam footage of the incident or was travelling in the area at the time, is asked to contact police.
