Friday update: 100 children with coronavirus in York as city rating goes from Green to Red
Another 115 coronavirus cases were confirmed in York today (Friday, 20 August).
That takes the cumulative case total to 19,252 – giving an overall infection rate of 9,123.7 cases per 100,000 people.
In the last seven days 713 people in York have tested positive for Covid-19 – up 57 (8.7%) week on week.
The rolling seven-day rate in York is 318.0 new cases per 100,000 people (671 cases in the week to 16 August). That’s down from 345.0 in the previous seven days (728 cases in the week to 9 August).
The English national average is 310.4, the Yorkshire and Humber average is 369.9.
There was one coronavirus death in the City of York Council area reported today, and one in the last seven days (as at 20 August).

Triage: As at 17 August there had been 54 Covid triages in the York area in the previous seven days. There were 57 last week.
Symptomatic Covid: As at 19 August, the Covid Symptom App estimates 1,415 per 100,000 in York with symptomatic Covid (responses from a sample of 3,453 people). It was 960 last week. The peak rate was 1,661 on 28 July.
Ranking: York is currently ranked 92nd out of 149 Upper Tier Local Authorities (UTLAs) in England on case rates, with a rank of 1 indicating the lowest seven day rate. It was 113th last week.
Exceedance: The PHE ‘Exceedance’ rating compares the number of new cases over a 14 day period with the previous six weeks and provides a red-amber-green rating to indicate if the trend is worsening. The rating for York is Red. It was Green last week.
Testing: As at 17 August, the seven-day positivity rate in York (Pillar 2 PCR tests only) was 13.35%. That’s down from 14.36% last week. The national and regional averages are 13.7% and 16% respectively. The latest 7 day positivity rate in York for Pillar 1 tests only was 1.4% (no change). The national average is 1.3%.
Local contact tracing: Between 10 March and 13 August, 3,445 referrals had been actioned by the local contact tracing service. Of the referrals actioned, 3,113 (90.4%) were successful and 332 (9.6%) were unable to be reached via phone or home visit.
Cases in care homes: As at 13 August there were nine care homes in the CYC area with confirmed Covid-19 infection (at least 1 case of either a staff member or resident) – up from six last week.
Cases among children: In the seven days up to 16 August there were 100 children of primary and secondary school age who tested positive, up from 68 children the week before.
Deaths: In the ONS data up to 6 August, 399 coronavirus-related deaths were recorded as having occurred for York residents (230 in hospital, 136 in care homes, 25 at home/elsewhere and eight in a hospice). That is up one change since the previous week. The number of deaths per 100,000 of population in York is 189.09 which is lower than the national average of 235.03.
Covid bed occupancy: As at 17 August, there were 24 confirmed Covid-19 patients in General and Acute beds at York Hospital, the same as the week before. The peak number was 157 on 19 January. There was three confirmed Covid-19 patients in the Intensive Treatment Unit, the same as the week before.
Total vaccinations: As at 18 August, 150,337 York residents had had the first dose (84.3% of people aged 16+); and 125,500 had had the second vaccine (70.4% of people aged 16+).
In North Yorkshire, there were 262 new coronavirus cases today, taking the cumulative total to 47,969 – an infection rate of 7,729.3 cases per 100K.
