Things have taken a decidedly upmarket turn at York Station.
Two new venues opened there today, offering travellers more choice, food and comfort.
LNER revealed its swish new first class lounge, while Sainsbury’s unveiled its station supermarket.

York has been one of the largest stations on the East Coast route without lounge facilities for customers travelling in first class.
That has now changed, with the new lounge offering free food and drink and a place for passengers to work in comfort. And the decor features some of York’s rich heritage – including a Viking helmet.
Claire Ansley, customer experience director at LNER, said: “A first class lounge facility at York Station has been on the wish list for people travelling through the station for some time, so we’re really excited to roll out a warm welcome to business and leisure travellers visiting this fantastic new lounge.”
Food to go
Tim Dunn, railway historian and broadcaster, who officially opened the lounge, said: “It’s brilliant to see a first class lounge return to York station, following the closure of the original facilities several decades ago.
“York holds an incredible amount of historic importance particularly for the railway, so it great to see the lounge incorporate some of this history, giving visitors a real sense of what the city is about.”
Meanwhile, the newest store in the Sainsbury’s estate officially opened its doors at the station today. It will offer nearby residents, commuters and tourists a convenient place to pick up their shopping, from 6am-11pm Monday through to Sunday.

As well as a wide range of grocery and household products, the shops has a self-service Costa coffee machine.
The store is the second Sainsbury’s Local to open in York this year, following the opening of York Davygate Local in March.
Sainsbury’s property director Patrick Dunne said: “I’m really delighted that we are opening our second new store in York this year in this long sought-after location for Sainsbury’s.
“It means that not only local residents, but those travelling to and from the city by rail, will be able to enjoy the convenience, quality and value that Sainsbury’s has to offer.”
More big names are coming to the station soon – York Gin, Potions Cauldron and Spring Espresso are coming, alongside Pret A Manger.
