A166 open again after a lorry hit a bridge near York

The A166 has opened to traffic again after a lorry struck a listed river bridge.

Motorists were advised to avoid the A166 at Stamford Bridge after the incident.

It’s not thought there were any injuries.

The temporary work is complete and the bridge at Stamford Bridge has reopened following yesterday's bridge strike by a vehicle. There will be no restrictions imposed & the bridge is reopen to all traffic.

An East Riding of Yorkshire Council spokesman confirmed a wide lorry attempted to get over the bridge at Stamford Bridge and collided with both sides of the bridge a number of times. This led to damage to the sandstone blocks of the listed structure which made the bridge unsafe for motorists.

Highways Yorkshire put diversions place. The AA said there was queuing traffic both ways between Buttercrambe Road and Viking Road. The A1079 was also affected too as people tried to avoid the hold ups.

The lorry was first reported to be stranded on the bridge over the River Derwent, however it has been later confirmed that the lorry hit it.

Buses were also diverted via the A1079 and Dunnington.
