An independent, female-run coffee shop and bakery is expanding.

Melk, which already operates from Spark:York, is moving in to 10 Clifford Street.

It was previously home to the Daughter Café, which revealed it wouldn’t be reopening in February.

Georgia Victory opened Melk in July 2019, expanding to a bigger Spark unit a year later.

Melk, which means milk in Norwegian, came from Georgia’s love of Scandinavian simplicity.

When the Spark cafe is open, diners can watch the team bake in the open kitchen. Melk also runs a successful online shop, selling celebration cakes, cupcakes and brownies.

The firm announced its latest expansion on its Instagram page yesterday (Tuesday): “We are beyond excited to finally share with you what we’ve been up to the past couple of months behind the scenes: Melk is getting a second location!

“We are so happy to announce that we are moving into the premises of the old Daughter Cafe – a beautiful building that has clearly received so much love from its owners, with large bright windows and so much storage space (small businesses, you know what I mean).

“Of course, we will be operating as takeaway only for the time being, but we hope to be able to welcome you in our new, sunny café soon.”

The Spark:York cafe will remain, with the Clifford Street venue opening for takeaway on 19 April. “We will be offering a slightly different menu, but all will be revealed soon,” they said.

Daughter Café announced its decision not to reopen in February. “Like everyone else we’ve had our ups and down, negotiating home schooling and everything in between,” they said.

“After going round in circles we have settled on not reopening the cafe at this time in our lives. It’s a sad outcome but one we haven’t taken lightly. We want to thank all our customers, staff and suppliers who have supported us throughout.”
