Issued by City of York Council

City of York Council is enticing even more people to experience York’s unique and vibrant retail and cultural offer over the Christmas period with extended Park&Ride (P&R) services on Thursdays and free Boxing Day P&R travel.

In the lead up to Christmas, the council is working with First to provide a late night shopping service on all five Park & Ride routes every Thursday, with the last bus leaving the city centre on all routes at around 9.30pm (for exact timings go to the iTravel website.).

The first extended service will run from the 28 November to coincide with the biggest Christmas market in York’s calendar – St Nicholas Fayre.

In addition to this, passengers will also be able to take advantage of FREE travel on Boxing Day on the three key P&R routes which will be operating.

Three Park & Ride services will operate on Boxing Day:

Askham Bar (white line – route 3) – First bus at 7am from the site, last bus back from Tower Street at 6.45pm
Designer Outlet (red line – route 7) – First bus at 7am from the site, last bus back from Rougier Street at 6.42pm
Monks Cross (silver line – route 9) – First bus at 7am from the site, last bus back from Rougier Street at 6.43pm

All three services will operate at a 15 minute frequency throughout the day and will be FREE for all passengers (and will stop at all usual stops along the route).

Cllr Dave Merrett, Cabinet Member for Transport, Planning and Sustainability, said: “The Park & Ride bus service for late night shoppers and Boxing Day is part of the council’s commitment to support city centre retailers.

“Like last year, we hope that the initiative will help our city centre economy on the build up to Christmas and kick start the sale season, encouraging even more shoppers to come to York.”

Frank Wood, Chair of the Retail Forum, said: “The York Retail Forum is delighted that the Park & Ride will be not only open on Boxing Day but also be free to use.

“This will support visitors to York who will, after the delights, stresses and strains of Christmas Day, be able to relax with some retail therapy in the superb shopping destination of York.

“The extension to the late night shopping days will help to revitalise the use of shopping in the evening allowing the whole family to take part.”

Will Pearson, Business Manager for First in York, said: “First is delighted to play its part in ensuring the Park and Ride is central to people’s travel plans over the festive period.”

The initiative is part of the York By Bus campaign, which aims to increase passenger use by 18 per cent by 2015.
