York singer-songwriter Beth McCarthy has become a TikTok superstar – after her video was watched a jaw-dropping 4.6 million times.
The TikTok sees Beth singing – and crying – along to her latest song, She Gets The Flowers. And the internet fell instantly in love with it.
She told Ben and Laura on the Breakfast Show on YorkMix Radio how it came about.
“I was a bit of a naysayer with TikTok. Even at 23 felt that I was too old. That’s how young the demographic of TikTok is,” she said.
“I was kickstarted to do it, because somebody filmed me while I was busking. And that video did really well.”
Soon Beth’s own TikTok content was gaining a big audience – her rewritten version of Taylor Swift’s Romeo and Juliet has now had 837K views.
So Beth decided to bring forward the release of She Gets The Flowers – and created a TikTok to go with it.
“And this one has done its own little thing already,” she said. “It’s already gone kind of viral on TikTok with a little video of me crying in the car.”
She Gets The Flowers is released tomorrow (Friday, 26 March) – you can pre-save it here.
“Honestly, it’s incredible,” Beth told Ben and Laura, about the number of views. “I didn’t expect that many people see that side of me – but OK!”
Beth, who featured in the first series of The Voice, said she’s a realist when it comes to ‘overnight success’. “I’ve been through that enough times now to know that you shouldn’t get over excited – but I am I am saying this could really be the moment for me.
“And that’s kind of terrifying – but also amazing.”
