York Theatre Royal’s TakeOver festival is a fantastic opportunity to see renowned theatre companies performing new and modern classic works in a venue which usually offers one stale revival after another.

As well as the picks of the festival below, watch out for the free gigs and events which will be popping up alongside the festival proper. With deck-chairs imported from Scarborough, a TakeOver beer and drinks deals, the theatre has become the perfect hangout for young York and regular theatre-goers alike.

Tender Napalm by Philip Ridley

Thursday June 7, Studio
Philip Ridley’s Tender Napalm has been receiving brilliant reviews on the short tour it has taken across Britain after its debut at the Southwark Playhouse earlier this year. Ridley is a celebrated writer as well as a visual artist, his plays a fusion of storytelling, movement and bastardised fairytales. Tender Napalm promises to be a duet for an unnamed Adam and Eve, a look at what relationships mean to men and woman. It’s for one night only and tickets are selling out, so get yours soon.

Verve 12 by The Northern School of Contemporary Dance

Tuesday June 5, Main House
Verve dance company come to YTR to present an evening of selected choreography. This energetic, innovative dance company will be performing works from celebrated dancer Akram Khan. Reason enough to see this.

Wasted by Kate Tempest

Thursday May 24 – Saturday May 26, Main House.
Paines Plough, Britain’s foremost new writing theatre company, produced Tempest’s new play about three friends who are all disappointed with life after the freedom of adolescence. It mixes rap and performance poetry to record a single day in which their lives will change forever.
