The Gesualdo Six will lead the celebrations for the National Centre for Early Music’s Early Music Day 2021.

The National Centre for Early Music (NCEM) is hosting a residency with the vocal consort to celebrate Early Music Day this year.

The Gesualdo Six will perform a concert which will be streamed live at 3pm on 21 March, joining other musical organisations throughout Europe for a programme of events celebrating JS Bach’s birthday. The vocal consort will be debuting Josquin’s Legacy – a celebration of Josquin des Prez, a French composer of the Renaissance.

The award-winning ensemble will spend almost a week in York on a whistle-stop tour performing in a variety of locations, which will be filmed and shared as part of the NCEM’s ‘Awaken’ music festival. The locations include York Minster, Holy Trinity Church, St Olave’s Church, and the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall.

The film aims to celebrate the beauty of the city and its musical influences, as well as showcasing many of its venues which have been unable to open their doors since the first lockdown.

Delma Tomlin MBE, director of the NCEM said: “We are delighted to welcome our good friends The Gesualdo Six, who will be spending time in York. The concert will be shared with our friends and colleagues in Europe and beyond, as we join together for this wonderful annual celebration. You might not be able to be with us in person, but we hope you can still join us for a feast of fabulous music.”

The Gesualdo Six is comprised of some of the UK’s finest young consort singers, and directed by Owain Park. After forming in March 2014, the group have given over 150 performances in numerous major festivals in the UK and abroad in its first five years. They were recently awarded Choir of the Year at the Classical Music Digital Awards.

Owain Park, director of The Gesualdo Six said: “We have long admired the work of NCEM in York and so it has been an immense privilege to curate a musical journey which weaves through the city’s historic venues. Chiming with the NCEM’s spring celebrations, we aim to highlight the extraordinary power of collaboration and unity in a world where the seeds of division are increasingly sown.”

The concert will be streamed on the NCEM’s Facebook page and website and will be free to watch. For more information please visit the NCEM website.
