A former car workshop in York city centre is set to be demolished to make way for new flats.
The single-storey former Ren O Man garage at 22 Toft Green would be removed to make way for a new four-storey building of six serviced apartments plus ground-floor commercial space.
A neighbouring building at number 20, formerly Transit Motorcycles, would remain. It would be renovated to provide commercial space on the ground floor and first floors.
The second floor would be converted into two apartments, with a new third floor added to create two more apartments.
In a planning application to City of York Council, documents state that the “former car workshop is in relatively poor condition. Demolition and redevelopment is the most economic option.
“Demolition provides the opportunity to reveal the rear facades of numbers 142-144 Micklegate and improve their rear elevations which are currently hidden by the existing building.”
‘Improve the area’
The planning documents state: “The redundant No 22 Toft Green (former Ren O Man garage), together with the current under-utilisation of a number of adjoining buildings presents a significant opportunity to improve the area.
“As all the key buildings are currently in a single ownership, redevelopment which minimises any disruption to neighbours and tenants is made possible.”
Meanwhile, plans are in to demolish the George Chapman MOT Centre and
Autopoint car sales garage in Heworth.
Ten new two- and three-storey houses, containing a mixture of two, three, four and five bedrooms, would be built in its place.
“The removal of the one storey existing buildings and forecourt, and the introduction of the houses in line with the existing properties along the road, helps the development to fit in better with the Heworth Village street scene,” documents say.
“The nature of the development has been designed to enhance the site area, creating a modern residential scheme that will be respectful to the surrounding listed buildings and overall conservation area.”
