This was the scene in York city centre minutes after the 10pm curfew last night (Saturday).
The Facebook video, shot by Joshua Murphy, showed hundreds of pubgoers on the streets crowded together, dancing and singing.
Shot on the corner of Church Street and Swinegate, it shows the revellers joining in with the Killers’ song Mr Brightside.
A police van then arrives, to a chorus of boos.
Some of the people then walk away but others gather around the van. Then more singing and dancing starts
The footage, which shows very little social distancing, has been viewed more than 261K times.
It has caused shock and concern among viewers. As Joshua who shot the video says himself: “All the venues shutting at 10pm, they think this is the solution.”
‘See you all in lockdown’
The York Taxi & Private Hire Group also shared it to their group page, saying: “All the venues kicking out at 10pm in York last night.
“No social distancing, no masks and about 80 Uber vehicles in the city that have come from areas currently on Covid-19 lockdown.
“It won’t be long before York is in lockdown if authorities don’t put a stop to it.”
Another commenter agreed: “We will be in lockdown again soon. Makes my blood boil when most of us are doing as we should to stop it spreading.”
And another said: “I am so ashamed to call this my home town – see you all in lockdown because the young kids think this is a joke.”
Others made the point that this could have been predicted. “What did they expect closing every pub at the same time in a city like this?”
And other commenters took a different view entirely: “They’re young people doing what young people do.
“They’ve had to leave their venues so they’ve taken it outside. Good for them….power to the people!!”
