The Berwick Kaler panto – which switched so dramatically from the York Theatre Royal to the Grand Opera House this year – will not now go ahead this Christmas.
Today (Wednesday) the Opera House officially confirmed that the long-awaited return of Berwick as the dame was postponed.
But Dick Turpin Rides Again will ride again – in 2021.
The theatre posted on Twitter: “We can confirm our 2020 Pantomime is moving to Christmas 2021/22.
“While this is sad news, we are delighted that the show and its stars will all return next year!
“We will be contacting all customers directly and appreciate your patience as we manage all orders and enquiries.”
The show spent decades as the in-house Christmas show at York Theatre Royal, before being brought to an end by theatre boss Tom Bird at the end of this year’s season.
Berwick and his gang – Martin Barrass, Suzy Cooper, David Leonard and AJ Powell – were then signed up the the Grand Opera House, much to the delight of their legions of fans.
Meanwhile, the Theatre Royal recently announced it was staging a travelling panto this festive season.
