Housing

This is how a new community will look in York – a dream now up for sale on a city website.

Lowfield Green is the name of a development of 165 homes, which is created by developer Shape Homes York.

The housing will consist of

  • 140 bungalows, apartments and houses – for sale on the open market and for shared ownership
  • six self-built homes
  • and 19 homes built by community group YorSpace.

The 140 homes are built by City of York Council. A council report said: “It is considered that the successful implementation and use of the Shape Homes York brand would increase our opportunity to sell our homes at a rate and level which can help to cross fund our development costs.”

Shape Homes York says it plans to build 600 homes over eight developments.

Move in next year

Ground-breaking design: the Shape Homes York housing

Expressions of interest for Lowfield Green are already being received and reservations will start from August 2020, with the first homes ready to move into in early 2021.

You can find out more on the Shape Homes York website.

A mix of housing

The new green space will be open and ready for use by the local community in 2021.

The council says: “Shape Homes York is pushing the boundaries of traditional house building by addressing climate change, optimising space and using ground-breaking design and building techniques to shape a place people will want to call home.”

Sales prices will be announced over the coming weeks. Information will be shortly confirmed around how priority will be given to those who need to buy a bungalow to support their health and wellbeing.

‘Way ahead of their time’

Developers are hoping to create a new community

Cllr Denise Craghill, executive member for housing and safer neighbourhoods, said: “All are being built to high environmental standards in keeping with the council’s commitment to tackling the climate emergency and to provide very low energy bills to residents.

“I’m particularly pleased we can offer the city’s heroic key workers a chance to buy a share in these new ‘homes for heroes’. They and other eligible households can buy through our shared ownership scheme.”

Managing director of Ashtons Estate Agents Peter Docwra said there was already a lot of interest in the innovative homes.

“Lowfield Green’s desirability stems from the design of the unique and incredibly spacious new-build homes.

“They’re way ahead of their time as well as being set in a garden site with landscaped open spaces.”
