Issued by City of York Council
The York Jobs Fair held today at the Barbican, has been hailed as a great success with around 1500 people turning out across the day to gain precious information and advice.
The event, which was organised through partnerships between the council, Learning City York, Job Centre Plus and York Learning aimed to bring together local employers and offer advice, as well as employment opportunities, to unemployed residents.
Overall feedback from the employers present today was also positive, with TK Maxx commenting that as result of the jobs fair, they may have filled all of their Christmas vacancies. Other businesses are expecting a high volume of applications on the back of the event.
Cllr James Alexander, Labour leader for City of York Council said “Today signified another highly encouraging step for the cities jobseekers and residents to improve their skills and qualifications, and shows the hard work we at the council are doing to instigate further economic growth and create jobs for the people of York.
“The attendance figure today proves that unemployment is still an issue for us. We accept this, however today more than anything is an example of how we are making positive steps forward for this city.”
