A York pub has been given a second lease of life – and it is celebrating with a brand new look.
A year ago The Micklegate at 127 looked set to be demolished to make way for a giant new hotel .
But after strong opposition, we revealed last month that the hotel plans had been scaled back – and The Micklegate at 127 would be preserved .
Owner Amber Taverns decided to celebrate by giving the pub a makeover. And last night (Friday) was its triumphant re-opening.
“Originally we were due to be closing because of the hotel, and then we got confirmation that they were giving us November, and that we would be staying open for a full refurb,” Hannah Hubbuck, the general manager at the 127, told YorkMix.
When the news broke that the pub was due to close, the team was upset she said:
Everyone thought they were going to lose their jobs.
But since November they’ve all been really happy that they’ve kept their jobs and are going to have a brand new pub to work in.
Sporty screens
Regular customers were also happy about the decision to keep the 127 as they’ve been coming for the past six years and had been upset that they were going to have to find somewhere else.
Under the new plans, the hotel will be situated next to the Micklegate at 127. Hannah tells us: “There’ll be an increase in trade from it, especially with just being round the corner from the train station.”
With the re-opening comes a new colour palette and a new logo which incorporates the Viking heritage of York.
However the projector and TVs for sports, as well as the pool tables, have stayed. There are curved booths complete with their own screens for sporty socialising.
Hannah says: “We’ve gone for a more traditional colour palette, it was quite bold before, so it’s dialled back a bit.”
The Micklegate at 127 is the only York pub in the Amber Taverns group. The decision for the refurbishment came from the head office.
On Friday the new menu also launched, which includes cocktails and other drinks. Jam jar cocktails are on offer for 2 for £7.
Also new are Gin Flights which are little tasters of gin with lemonade or tonic, which will allow customers to try each individual one.
