Issued by City of York Council

The council’s cabinet member with portfolio for stronger communities has formally welcomed students to York who are being invited to a Student Day.

Councillor Linsay Cunningham-Cross, Cabinet Member for Crime and Stronger Communities, said: “I’d like to welcome all the students arriving in York for the start of the new academic year. York’s a great city in which to live and learn and congratulations on earning your place to study here.

“Students play a big part in the life of the city and form around ten percent of our population. So besides starting the next stage of your education, joining a new community is another new step.

“There are heaps of ways to get involved: from registering to vote in local elections to volunteering with York Cares to simply putting out your bins at the right time on the right day and being a good neighbour.

“I hope your time in York will be exciting and rewarding.”

In addition, freshers and returning students are invited to a Student Day on Saturday 19 October at Hull Road Cooperative store car park, from 10am-3pm.

City of York Council, local residents’ associations, the University of York Students Union and the police will be there to help support students living in the community.

Among the information and advice on offer will be tips on security and personal safety, plus the Time for Tea campaign which encourages students to share a cuppa with and get to know their neighbours.

Students starting the new academic year at the city’s higher education institutions have also been sent a letter of welcome from the Rt Hon Lord Mayor Cllr Julie Gunnell.
