Children are being invited to take part in a Viking poetry competition – and the winner’s poem will be read out on the radio.
Jorvik Radio is inviting youngsters between five and 16 years old in the York area to submit a poem to celebrate the world famous Jorvik Viking Festival that begins on Saturday 15 February.
The winning poem will be chosen by Beth Dawes, marketing manager at Jorvik Viking Centre. The lucky winner’s poem will be read out, live on air, by Shed Seven lead singer Rick Witter.
Rick said: “I am glad to be a part of something that is encouraging young people to be creative and in the context of celebrating York’s rich and vibrant history”.
The poems need to be about Vikings in York. Jorvik Radio presenter Jason Chinnian suggested “it could be a romantic Viking love poem, because the deadline for entries is Friday 14th February, Valentine’s Day”.
Entries need to be handed in to Jorvik Radio Station at Burnholme Community Centre in York or sent by email to [email protected] and must include the entrant’s name, age and the school they attend.
