A pedestrian has died in an accident on the A64 near York this morning.
Police were called out shortly before 5am today (Tuesday 4 February) to a report of a collision between a pedestrian and a car on the A64, near to the Fulford turn off.
A North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said:
-
Sadly the pedestrian, a man in his forties, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The road was closed between the A19 junction and the A1036 to enable emergency services to attend and for officers to conduct a thorough investigation of the scene.
The road is expected to be closed until midday.
A 33-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving and driving while unfit through drugs. He is currently in police custody.
Road was closed both ways
The A64 was closed in both directions to allow emergency services to respond.
It was shut between the A19 York Designer Outlet junction and the A1036 to Copmanthorpe.
The eastbound carriageway was reopened shortly after 10am, with the westbound reopened by 11.50am.
Before then, the incident caused serious delays with 2.5 miles of queuing traffic at rush hour and after.
And according to York Pullman Bus Co there were “several other RTCs that have made things worse.
“Total gridlock but huge praise to our passengers who have all been very understanding.”
Police also thanked motorists for their patience.
A64 is now fully open after the earlier accident. Thank you for your patience whilst we dealt with this tragic incident.
