Work to ‘transform’ York station begins this week

Work on York railway station will begin this week.

Train company LNER says preparatory work is already underway, and the full renovation is expected to be fully complete by the end of the year.

This will see the current Travel Centre relocated, toilet facilities improved and increased, the creation of a new First Class lounge and two new retail outlets.

Claire Ansley, customer experience director at LNER, said:

  • We’re delighted to be embarking on the improvement work at the station.

    It will truly transform the station and give visitors a much warmer welcome to the city.

    We have long been asked for a First Class lounge facility, so I’m also really excited that we will be able to welcome business and leisure travellers into a bespoke York lounge by the end of the year.


LNER says the significant investment in improving the station will create “a more pleasant experience for all customers whilst being respectful of the heritage of the station” – a Grade 2 star listed building.

During the work, the ladies’ toilets on the main concourse will no longer be available, and a temporary facility located next to the gent’s toilets on platform 4 will be provided.
