The Jorvik Viking Festival returns, in its 36th annual celebration of all things Norse.
This year the festival runs from Saturday 15 Feb to Sunday 23 Feb, with the theme for 2020 being ‘Voyages of the Vikings’.
Because of the approaching Storm Dennis, organisers have been able to rearrange most of the most exposed events to alternative, sheltered and indoor locations for the first few days of the festival.
Incorporating two weekends this year, it gives even more visitors the chance to experience the history behind the city and the lives of those who settled here, and exploring how Vikings were perceived by other cultures around the world during their travels.
Decamping to the hall
From Saturday to Monday, this will be relocated to the Undercroft at the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall where there will be free entry on all three days.
Many of the events due to take place on the St Sampson’s Square stage and Parliament Street marquee will temporarily relocated to Spark: York on Piccadilly on Saturday and Sunday, including Saga Storytelling and the festival’s newest event, the Viking Costume Competition on Saturday 15 February at 3.00pm.
Have-a-go Sword Workshops will take place in DIG: An Archaeological Adventure on St Saviourgate from Saturday to Monday, hopefully returning to St Sampson’s Square on Tuesday 18 February for the rest of the festival.
The Nine Realms Bar will operate as normal in Parliament Street for the duration, within the same tent that will host Viking Crafting for Kids during the weekdays.
At this stage, the only events that have been cancelled are the City Tours, taking place on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, starting instead on Tuesday 18 February.
