North Yorkshire Police is backing a national campaign led by the Association of Chief Police Officers to crack down on alcohol-fuelled disorder and raise awareness of the impact alcohol has on policing resources.
Excessive drinking is the cause of many crimes and much antisocial behaviour, stretching the resources of the emergency services and health workers.
It also causes misery for local people who are affected by this unacceptable behaviour, not to mention leaving those who consume too much drink more susceptible to injury and vulnerable to crime.
To support the five-day campaign which starts next week (18 September 2013) North Yorkshire Police is highlighting the huge amount of work carried out by its officers to prevent alcohol-related incidents.
From working with licensees and door-staff, engaging with new and existing students and putting on extra patrols to working with partner agencies such as the NHS and local councils.
The week has been scheduled to coincide with the start of many Fresher’s events at universities and colleges across the UK.
Assistant Chief Constable Paul Kennedy, said: “Many people enjoy alcohol and drink in moderation, however, there is a minority whose drinking can have an effect on everyone of us, from local communities suffering from antisocial behaviour to the victims of serious crimes and drink drivers.
“Our officers and staff will be out and about across our towns and cities this week to drive home the message about safe drinking, enforce the law, and to keep our communities as safe as possible.
“It’s important that people realise how alcohol-fuelled crime and disorder impacts on the police service and the amount of resources which is put into tackling it. People must take greater responsibility for themselves and their friends to reduce the likelihood of them becoming injured, a victim or involved in violence.”
“Know your limits”, “stay hydrated”, “stick together” and “ensure you know how you are getting home” are just some of the safety messages which officers will be tweeting during the week of action.
North Yorkshire Police now has around 35 teams on Twitter. Most of them will be taking part in this campaign. To view all their messages follow @TeamNYP where you can get the latest updates on what’s happening across the force. All forces will be tweeting using #InFocus and #alcoholharm.
- Joint patrols with paramedics in York city centre will be in place along with static medical units in the city on Friday and Saturday night.
- Extra police will be on patrol in town centres as fresher’s celebrations get underway.
- York’s Operation Erase, a joint operation with British Transport Police to ensure rowdy parties travelling to and from York don’t get out of hand will continue.
- Licensing and Youth Action Officers will attend Fresher’s events at colleges and universities across the county to welcome new students and to talk to them about safe drinking and the consequences of having too much.
- Officers will also be carrying out covert licensed premises checks to ensure licensees are complying with the law.
- Particular attention will be paid to known alcohol-disorder hotspots to keep disturbance to a minimum.
