One customer neatly described it as ‘a great space with great food’ – but Source The Deli has now closed.

The Jubbergate cafe and delicatessen closed at the end of December after taking over the former newsagents next to Shambles Market in July 2018.

But there are plans to revive the business in a new form – while sister business, Source restaurant on Castlegate, is still going strong.

Owner Adam Lyons and the team said in a Facebook post they were sad to close the deli:

  • It’s with a heavy heart that we have to say goodbye.

Adam, Katie, John and the whole team want to thank York and its visitors for the support – you have been outstanding!

After looking at our running costs for nearly two years we have made the decision to close the doors.

Open longer

In their statement, the Source team said that “what will happen with 7 Jubbergate is still very much in a planning phase, we will take the new year break to decide what will happen next”.

Now Adam has applied for an alcohol licence for the premises.

He told YorkMix:

  • It’s a real shame, the cost of running the site outweighed the money coming in.

So with that, a simpler food offering with an alcohol offering seems to be the right way to go.

If the licence is granted Adam intends to open a café-bar in what was the deli.

According to the application, the new business would be based on the ground floor “but would look to extend into basement in time”.

There would be a minimum of 30 covers on the ground floor, with a possible ten covers added in the basement.

The alcohol licence would apply from 8am to 10.30pm daily, with the premises due to close half an hour later.

“The business will continue as a food-led operation. But without the opportunity to have extended hours it simply will not survive,” Adam said.
