A family-run restaurant in York city centre has served up its final dish.
The Go Down Restaurant, found down some steps on Clifford Street, has been a popular dining choice for 25 years.
But it closed its doors for good just before Christmas.
Run by Penelope and Peter Taylor, it regularly garnered five-star reviews on TripAdvisor, which awarded the restaurant with its Certificate of Excellence.
On the website they wrote:
-
Peter and Penelope are closing the door on the restaurant on the 23rd December for the last time.
We would like to thank all of our customers for their loyalty and support over the last 24 years.
Up for sale
It’s benefits are said to include:
- consistently high levels of sales and profitability with 64 covers available
- extremely well appointed and fitted out, set up for easy and efficient management
- well located, close to many attractions including the Grand Opera House, Castle Museum, Jorvik Museum, York Dungeon as well as York’s main retailing streets.
It is listed for sale at £55,000 for the lease, business goodwill and fixtures and fittings plus stock at valuation.
The quality of the food and service at the Go Down was reflected in excellent reviews throughout its time in York.
Our reviewer Ron Godfrey, writing in 2014, complimented the “amazing starters” and “slick, friendly and sometimes genially chatty service”.
The York Press commented on the “pleasant two-hour dining experience” – and the last TripAdvisor review said: “Quality food and you certainly will not go hungry having eaten here.”
