More details are emerging about the debts left behind by the company who brought Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre to York.

This week, we reported how the business owed City of York Council £43,000.

But now YorkMix has seen the entire list of creditors of Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre Ltd, which went into administration in September.

Altogether the business, based in Welburn north of York, owed £391,290 to more than 130 people and organisations.

And a lot of the creditors are businesses in and around York.

‘Slap in the face’

Food and drink suppliers to the Elizabethan village were hit
Among those hit was Brew York, the brewery based on Walmgate, which is owed £3,148 for beer supplied to the temporary Castle car park venue.

One of Brew York’s founders Wayne Smith told YorkMix it was a “massive” hit for his small business.

“It’s the biggest bad debt we have ever had,” he said. “We didn’t expect anything like this.”

The main bar company contracted by the venue is not on the creditors list, he said. “They obviously got paid in full, while the local company got stung.”

Brew York has worked with the sister company of Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre Ltd, Thor’s Bars Ltd, for the last three years, supplying beer to its Christmas tipi on Parliament Street. Wayne said:

  • After Shakespeare’s Rose, we hoped we might at least recoup some of our losses on the back of Thor’s Tipi.

But they sent us a message saying they wouldn’t be using us this year.

It’s a slap in the face after what happened.

Another caterer, Dunnington-based frozen food suppliers Miller Food Service, is owed £3,273 by Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre Ltd, while StayCity Aparthotel on Paragon Street has an unpaid bill of £4,340.

Hamlet director hit

Damian Cruden
Damian Cruden, appointed the artistic director of Shakespeare’s Rose both in York and its second venue, Blenheim Palace, is another one owed money.

The former artistic director at York Theatre Royal also directed the pop-up theatre’s production of Hamlet this year. His company Damian Cruden Creative Ltd is owed £3,150.

York Theatre Royal itself is owed £1,108 by Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre Ltd. And musical group The York Waits is owed £800.

Other York business left unpaid included Commerical Cleaning Company (York) Ltd, owed £4,629, and security company Eboracum UK, owed £6,606. Filmmaker Hewitt & Walker is owed £1,014.

Other York people and firms left out of pocket are

  • Meadowcrofts Dry Cleaners, Monkgate – owed £591
  • SJ Sports Therapy, base at Emperors Health Club on Skeldergate – £350
  • Sloe Motion, Barton le Willows – £165
  • Paul Stonehouse – £1,300
  • Terrance Olivers Woodworking – £252
  • York Environmental Services – £400
  • York Gin Company – £343

Along with City of York Council, the biggest creditors are Acorn Scaffolding of Leeds (£71K), the Global Marketing Group of Wiltshire (£27K), Harrogate Theatre Scenic Services (£22K) and Searcy Tansley & Co of London – “Britain’s oldest catering company” (£38K).

YorkMix has contacted the director of Shakespeare’s Rose Theatre Ltd James Cundall for comment, but has yet to receive a response.
