York’s new sporting arena will be called the LNER Community Stadium, it was confirmed today.
It follows a decision taken regarding the stadium’s naming rights at a meeting on Tuesday (26 November).
Executive member for finance and performance Cllr Nigel Ayre agreed at his decision session this afternoon that train company LNER would become the main corporate sponsor.
This decision marks another major milestone in the development of the stadium which Cllr Ayre says will “secure the financial sponsorship of the stadium for years to come”.
Financially sustainable
Cllr Nigel Ayre, Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Finance and Performance, said he was delighted that LNER has become the main corporate sponsor of the stadium, adding:
-
This new sponsorship deal will ensure that the LNER Community Stadium remains financially sustainable for years to come.
It is entirely fitting that such a fantastic asset for the city will become synonymous with LNER, who are of course a truly respected company, based right here in the city.
He said the stadium was “due to open early 2020”.
“It is an exciting time in the development of York’s Community Stadium, and although I completely understand the frustration caused by delays in its completion, it will be an excellent venue for all residents and visitors to enjoy.”
