City of York Council’s West Offices will be the venue for the Let’s Talk Diabetes event which is taking place on Thursday 8 August 2013 at 6.30pm.
Vale of York Clinical Commissioning Group (VOYCCG) is hosting the session that is aimed at people who have diabetes or know someone who does, people who care for someone with the condition and those that come into contact with people with diabetes in a professional capacity.
The event will include a presentation of the CCG’s recent survey results and explain about important local performance information.
There will also be an opportunity to learn more about the potential redesign of the local diabetes service and the process that will be needed to make this happen.
City of York Council’s Director of Health and Wellbeing Dr Paul Edmondson-Jones said: “A recent Public Health England (PHE) review confirmed that checking the blood pressure, cholesterol, weight and lifestyle of 40-74 year-olds via the NHS Health Checks scheme could identify problems earlier and prevent 650 deaths and 1,600 heart attacks a year as well as identifying at least 4,000 new cases of diabetes a year.
“Early diagnosis, treatment and good control of diabetes is vital to reduce the chances of developing serious complications of diabetes which can include blindness and amputation.
“I would encourage local residents to come along to the meeting and help shape the future design of diabetic services in York.”
Councillor Tracey Simpson-Laing, Cabinet member for Health, Housing and Adult Social Services said: “Having a good local diabetes service is crucial to ensure that people living with diabetes, and those around them, receive the most appropriate care and advice to manage their condition.
“I would urge people to seek help early if they think they have symptoms of diabetes in a bid to prevent long term complications from the condition.”
