Shepherds, saints, soldiers and singers will descend on Museum Gardens this Saturday (August 3) as the acclaimed team behind York Mystery Plays 2012 enjoy another deserved moment in the sun.

The York Mystery Plays Supporters Trust is inviting everyone who helped stage the plays last year to grab their blankets and picnics and join the informal get together at 4pm.

Museum Gardens will bring back memories for performers and backstage crew alike, as it was here that they put on the spectacular cycle of plays to great popular and critical acclaim.

York Mystery Plays 2012 saw more than 1,700 local people join forces with the city’s theatre professionals to present the new production in front of full houses.

They packed the 350 square metre stage, built against the backdrop of St Mary’s Abbey. Professional actors Ferdinand Kingsley and Graeme Hawley joined the volunteers to create a riot of colour and drama from the bible stories.

“Last year’s Mystery Plays was a fantastic event and it’s important that the positive feelings of local pride and community spirit that were generated are kept going,” said supporters trust chair Alex Hughes.

“Many friendships were formed during the course of the production so it will be great for people to get together once more, reminisce about past events and also look forward to future productions – including next year’s waggon plays.”

The reunion picnic will take place on Saturday from 4pm at the Bowling Green in the Museum Gardens and is open to all, with those attending asked to bring their own food and drink.
