It’s too stormy for York’s brollies!

The wet and windy conditions have proved too much for one of York’s most Instagramable attractions.

Thirty-six umbrellas in the Coppergate Centre’s Brollywalk have been refurled this morning in anticipation of the storms and gusts of over 50mph forecast for this weekend.

The brollywalk design changes every month and this time they carried colourful impressionist art designs inspirted by the Van Gogh exhibition (see below).

But if the forecasts are right, some of the brollies could have been carried far and wide in the stormy conditions, so to be safe they’ve come down.

Indoor fun

How they usually look
Centre staff believe Coppergate is one of the best places to visit, whatever the weather.

Centre manager Pippa Unwin said:

  • Although we’re an outdoor shopping centre, we’re always ready for the bad weather – shoppers and visitors can park undercover in Piccadilly Car Park and have covered access to Fenwick, Primark, Flying Tiger and TopShop, which is ideal if the expected thunderstorms arrive.

And there are plenty of indoor attractions to enjoy in the dry too, from the Jorvik Viking Centre to immersive art installation Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience in York St Mary’s.

“Add in a trip to Fairfax House, and finish with a coffee from Caffe Nero or Bagel Nash, cake from Patisserie Valerie or hearty Italian fare in Carluccio’s and you’ve easily filled a day with the perfect blend of culture, shopping and food and drink,” says Pippa.

It is anticipated that the brollies for the Impressionist Brollywalk will be re-opened on Sunday evening (11 August), ready for more pix.
