Friday provided another good day’s takings for YorkMix highwayman tipster, Dick Turpin. His nap selection Hippy Hippy Shake won at 7/1 and he had five out of six on the Placepot.
York Races recorded a record crowd for an evening meeting of 27,000, who partied the night away to Kaiser Chiefs.
Saturday marks the second day of the Music Showcase meeting, with Little Mix ready to entertain families at races close. But who to back before then? See our tipsters’ table for all the expert opinion.
Here are Turpin’s Saturday selections. Could Frankie Dettori be on for a double, he asks?
Grandeur (2.55) wouldn’t have to improve too much to give hot favourite Mukhadram a run for its money. And in the 3.30, Frankie’s mount Khubala is Turpin’s bet of the day.

It’s the Music Showcase weekend at York Racecourse, with Kaiser Chiefs playing at Knavesmire after the sporting action on the evening of Friday, July 26, and Little Mix performing post-races on Saturday, July 27.
But enough of such fripperies. The burning question is: can YorkMix tipster Dick Turpin do it again? He had plenty of winners and placed selections last time (including a bookie-bashing 14-1 winner of the opening race).
That might be too much to hope for again, but he sounded pretty confident when he dropped by Mix Towers on Black Bess at first light. Here’s his appraisal of the six-race card.
6pm
A good open contest that should be a great test for apprentice riders. A strong case could be made for at least five of these nine runners. So we will side with the most promising rider, Richard Oliver, whose weight advantage gives Hard Core Debt a serious chance against Nurpur and Future Reference. Simply Shining looks likely to be in the shake-up too.
6.30pm
Hang on to your hats. This 20-runner sprint will be a fascinating cavalry charge – and probably the tightest finish of the night. Perhaps one to avoid plunging the family silver on. But if you have to take a punt, try Sir Pedro, with Bop It as an entertaining each-way chance, possibly at longish odds.
7pm
Only a fool will invest a fortune on this maiden race, which has a habit of turning up some good newcomers. Leeds United fans will be tempted by Bremner, no doubt. Bremner’s breeding credentials would make for a solid choice. But the clever money may be on Kalahari Kingdom; risk-takers might like a long-shot at Il Paparazzi.
7.30pm
Easily the most intriguing contest on the card. Albasharah is the obvious choice and looks certain to be thereabouts. But Turpin hates making the obvious choice. Though she’s not even in the top three rated for this race, Hippy Hippy Shake caught our eye here last year, and Kieren Fallon will get the best from her over the testing ten furlongs – something of an outsider, but with a real live chance. Lady Nouf and Lady’s First are also worthy of consideration.
8pm
This should be a straight battle between Ehtedaam and Altharoos. David O’Meara’s Frog Hollow is the only real threat to break up their party.
8.30pm
Will Jofranka get her hat-trick? Jason Hart’s mount has an outstanding chance. And wise old Turpin would not put anyone off that choice. But we will be seeking better value, and be risking the Turpin gold on two great each-way prospects: Time And Place and Tumblewind.
What ho, bookies! Stand and deliver.
