Yesterday, the £31,125 Sky Bet Dash (2.40) looked to be at the mercy of Gulliver, Staxton or Growl. Though we can’t rule them out, the continuing easing of the ground now brings Tim Easterby’s Flying Pursuit strongly back into the reckoning.

The six-year-old gelding has triumphed in this prestigious contest for the last two years – and now the rain has arrived to give his chances a real boost. He won’t have it all his own way, though. The aforementioned trio, together with David O’Meara’s Tomily will be right there at the line too.

Dakota Gold also comes into the equation, having been sharpened by an encouraging reappearance at Newcastle last month.

A small but competitive field for the feature race, The Sky Bet York Stakes (3.15). sir Michael Stoute’s Regal Reality sets the standard here, after an impressive third in the Eclipse Stakes three weeks ago.

As long as the colt can act on the going, he should account for main rivals Addeybb and Bangkok. The betting market should offer the best clue there.

It’s hard to believe that there is any other contender with the class of Abstemious in the Median Auction Stakes (3.45). His debut here two weeks ago saw him touched off only by the highly rated Oh Purple Reign. The newcomers, International Tiger and Creativity are unknown quantities, though the latter’s pedigree suggests there might be a flicker of a threat.

But Kevin Ryan’s charge, in the capable hands of Jamie Spencer, remains a confident nap selection.
