Burgers are out and Asian street food is in.

A new restaurant is planning to open in the former Gourmet Burger Kitchen on Lendal.

Zaap Thai Street Food has three establised restaurants, in Leeds, Nottingham and Newcastle, and its next stop is York. They say:

  • When you step inside a Zaap restaurant you will feel like you have been transported into a Bangkok street food market, with all its magical hustle and bustle, neon lighting, funky tuk tuks and, of course the most amazing Thai street food you will ever taste!

With over 80 of the most authentic Thai street food dishes on the menu, your taste buds will rock to the Bangkok vibe and you’ll feel like you are in the street food capital of the world, Thailand.

Gourmet Burger Kitchen closed in April after 12 years on Lendal.

Its parent company had got into difficulties and GBK closed a number of branches after entering a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) last December.

Number 7 Lendal has 1,516 sq ft of retailing space and costs £70K per annum in rent. When Zaap moves in it wants to open from 10am-12.30am Monday to Saturday, and noon to midnight on Sundays, and sell alcohol until midnight and 11.30pm respectively.

Zaap Thai dishes

Zaap’s menu includes Kanom Jeeb dim zum – steamed dumpling stuffed with a mixture of pork and prawn (£4.95) – and the Bangkok Platter – steamed pork and prawn dumpling, crispy wonton stuffed with chicken and prawn, chicken satay, chicken gyoza and Thai fish cake (£10.95).

It has a separate vegetarian menu, and drinks include bubble team (£4), iced Thai milk tea (£3.50) and an chan soda (£3).

Offers include two for £10 cockctails, and two courses for £10.
