Look out for a weird and eerie summer for children daring to take up this year’s Reading Challenge.
From Saturday 13 July to Sunday 15 September 2013, the Summer Reading Challenge will be run in every York library and Explore centre, with this year’s theme being a mysterious adventure called Creepy House.
Over the summer holiday period, five to 12-year-olds are challenged read six books in three stages:
- Stage 1: The Awful Upstairs – read two books and collect stickers to reveal the residents of Creepy House
- Stage 2: The Gruesome Ground Floor – read two more books to discover who is hiding there.
- Stage 3: The Spine-tingling Cellar – read two final books and complete the challenge by unveiling the bone-shaking Skeleton Family Robinson.

Councillor Sonja Crisp, City of York Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said: “As children read the books, they’re asked to come and tell library staff and volunteers about the books they have read – for which they’ll receive a small prize.
“Everyone who completes the challenge will be entered into a draw to win a Kindle Fire HD – but the biggest prize is having their love of reading fired: its a priceless, lifelong gift.”
New this year is a challenge for the youngest readers aged under five. They can collect stickers every time they visit the library to borrow books over the summer and receive a certificate when they have collected six stickers.
Children can join at any library at any time over the summer, and the Creepy House Challenge will be launched with a day of activities at Explore York Library on Saturday 13 July from 11am- 4pm.
Activities suitable for four to 12-year-olds will include York’s Terror Trail storytellers sharing their creepiest stories, a workshop by staff from York Minster where children can make clay ‘grotesques’ inspired by the intricate carvings in the Minster’s Chapter House.
In addition, participants can make a scary film, follow a creepy trail and have lots of summer fun with puzzles and colourings.
