Issued by City of York Council
School children from Archbishop of York Junior and Bishopthorpe Infant are taking an active part in cutting vehicle speed near their schools.
A competition was held in both schools to find six road safety themed designs, one for each pair of signs at the entry points into the 20mph-signed areas near the schools.
This week, the winning designs will be unveiled and the school children will get the chance to see their finished sign for the first time. The signs will remind drivers to take extra care as there may be children around.
The signs are the first phase of a package of measures which will also include other signing improvements, footway work and parking restrictions where children cross. It is hoped that this work will improve road safety in the areas around both schools for the benefit of the local community.
The scheme builds on the policy to introduce 20mph speed limits in residential areas to help promote considerate driving, make walking and cycling more attractive and raise confidence in the safety of local neighbourhoods.
Councillor Dave Merrett, Cabinet Member for Transport, Planning and Sustainability, said: “As a city we are committed to making York’s roads more attractive for walking and cycling and addressing safety concerns, so it’s really important that we raise as much awareness as we can of the dangers of speed.
“We thank the schools for participating in the competition which has enabled school children to have an active part in cutting vehicle speed near their schools.
“The introduction of lower speed limits reduces speeds, giving drivers more time to react to the presence of other road users, and reducing the likelihood and scale of any potential accidents.”
Jonathan Green, head teacher at Archbishop of York Junior, said: “The children got heavily involved in the competition with every single child putting in an entry.
“They have really appreciated being able to be such a big part of the project and understand fully the impact that the signs will have to their own and other people’s safety on and around the roads in Bishopthorpe.”
Residents can now pledge their support in making the roads in York safer for all. Whether they walk, run, cycle or drive they can make a real difference by signing up to the iPledge campaign.
