Coney Street will soon look even more folorn as two more big names go.
Burton and Dorothy Perkins are set to close in York, two of 23 stores in the UK and Ireland being axed by Sir Philip Green’s Arcadia Group.
Part of a rescue plan, the closures put 520 jobs at risk.
Across the country Topshop and Topman stores have been earmarked for closure alongside Dorothy Perkins and Burton as part of a company voluntary arrangement (CVA).
The retail group’s proposals will also see rent cut at another 194 outlets.
Shops had a reprieve
Burton and Dorothy Perkins on Coney Street were first set to close in 2017.
At the time an Arcadia spokeswoman said that they were “constantly reviewing our store portfolio across the group”.
Then the shops won a reprieve, as negotiations over a new lease continued.
Now though it looks like the end for the stores – another blow to Coney Street which has fallen from its place as York’s premiere shopping street following a series of store closures.
Burton’s Monks Cross store closed last year.
